The Third Man

Must See UK TV – Monday 16 April, 2012

Tonight see’s the start of a great new series on BBC2.  The 70s (1/4) starts with 1970 – 1972 and ‘takes a radical look back at a decade which … shaped the Britain of today’ (Radio Times).  Meanwhile, the concluding episode of Silent Witness can be seen on BBC1 at 9pm.

Also at 9pm, Game of Thrones (3/10) continues on Sky Atlantic (repeated at 12.10am), which is followed by Morgan Spurlock‘s New Britannia (3/10) at 10pm; and Universal has Series 2 of Harry’s Law (14/22) starring the brilliant Kathy Bates at 10pm.

Let me know if I’ve missed your favourite show.

What’s On UK TV Today – Sunday 15 April, 2012

Today’s must see TV includes some great shows.

BBC1 has a new two-part Silent Witness starting at 9pm (part two can be seen tomorrow at 9pm), which clashes with Channel 4’s brilliant Homeland; and the final episode of ITV1‘s Titanic.  Although, Titanic hasn’t quite lived up the hype that ITV generated for this show, I think the problem lies with the way it was edited rather than the way it was filmed or written.  With so much, repetition and  seeing the same events play out from the perspective of different characters it is often difficult follow one particular narrative thread and emotionally connect with any particular character.

However, to coincide with the 100th Anniversary of the sinking  it has a certain  appeal but for a more engaging view you could try Words of the Titanic, which follows on ITV1 at 10pm.

Meanwhile, Sky1 has Series 2 of Hawaii Five-O (16/24), followed by Series 3 of NCIS: Los Angeles (16/24). Then on E4, Series 8 of Desperate Housewives (15/23) continues at 10pm.

Let me know if I’ve missed your favourite show.

Film of The Day – Casablanca (Friday 13 April, 2012)

There can only be one great film to recommend today and that’s Casablanca (1942) on Film4 at 3.05pm.  This is Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman at their absolute best and it’s not difficult to see why this film often appears towards the top in any list of the greatest films of all time.

About The Film

Classic romantic drama starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid. Rick’s Café in wartime Casablanca is a watering hole for criminals, refugees, resistance fighters and Nazis. Its cynical owner, a mysterious expatriate American called Richard “Rick” Blaine, sticks his neck out for no one. No one, that is, until the arrival of the beautiful Ilsa Lund and her husband Victor Lazlo, who are desperate to escape to America.
